Lives of lottery winners since 1924
Winning a lottery can really test one’s character. Some manage to keep their integrity; others let their dark side come out. We found 6 great movies from 1924 to 2015, which portray the life of lottery winners vividly. Can you relate to any of them?
John McTeague was a San Francisco dentist back in the 1920’s, who married his best friend’s (Marcus) girlfriend Trina. Not long after their engagement, Trina wins a $5,000 lottery prize. Marcus, full of jealousy and rage, notifies the authorities that John is unlicensed and has been practicing dentistry for some time without a license. This results in John losing his work and he and Trina become penniless. John sinks into alcoholism and is aggressive and violent while Trina becomes obsessed with her winnings, and despite the gravity of the situation, refuses to spend one cent of it to improve things. John eventually murders his wife for the money and then he too becomes obsessed with that same lust for gold. He flees, only to face a final confrontation with his former friend. This is a story about how the three characters are dehumanized by the effect of money upon their lives.
