Man very nearly missed out on €500,000 win
The Meath syndicate, led by Deirdre Gingles from Mafic in Kells, travelled to National Lottery offices to collect the cheque on Tuesday.
The group had won the Lotto Plus 1 top prize from the draw on Saturday, December 5, after playing regularly together for almost two years.
The winning ticket was a €60 regular play Lotto ticket.
They chose their winning numbers together when they first began their syndicate in February 2014 and plan to continue playing these numbers in the future.
Deirdre Gingles, the group’s only woman, discovered they had won the prize when she got a surprise email from the National Lottery on Sunday morning.
She decided to wait until that evening, when the group were due to work a night shift together, to tell them about the win.

They immediately began planning a whopper of a celebration with their family and friends and are looking forward to a great Christmas.
Syndicate member Gabriel Finegan very nearly missed out on his share of the Lotto Plus 1 top prize, saying recently: “I recently changed shifts at work and was considering leaving the syndicate. “I spoke to Deirdre about it last Friday and she advised me to sleep on it before making my decision. “On Saturday morning I told her that I’d decided to remain in the group because I felt sure we would win.
“I can’t bear to think about what would’ve happened if I’d left.”
A second member of the group was also feeling very relieved as he sipped champagne in National Lottery offices. The man recently left his job at Mafic but thankfully opted to remain part of the syndicate for six months – December was his last month.
