Stunning historic Tuscan villas go up for sale from time to time, but this time, an entire medieval village has just hit the Italian real estate market. Poggio Santa Cecilia in Tuscany, an abandoned 800-year-old town, comes with spectacular views and ancient structures, but also a high price tag. The cost for the mini paradise? A cool $44 million.
According to the listing, the hilltop walled village spans 1,729 acres and is “situated 20 kilometers east of Siena, Tuscany, and just east of the Roman spa town of Rapolano Terme.” It comes complete with several farmhouses, workshops, cottages, remains of its medieval castle, a palatial 18th-century villa, piazzas, organic fruit farm, rural buildings, woodland, two lakes, and a church with a bell tower.
Not only does the lucky owner get own an entire town, he or she will also be close to famous cities in the region, like Florence, Pisa, Arezzo, Lucca, and Cortona. Tuscany is also known for its rich history in art with Michelangelo, Brunelleschi, Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Dante, Giotto, Puccini, and Galileo all once calling the area home. “Poggio Santa Cecilia offers an unrivalled opportunity to own an important piece of Italian history,” the listing says.
Not surprisingly, the place needs a little work. The village was abandoned in the 1960s and purchased by a group of investors who have left it relatively untouched.
