Why you should always check your Lottery ticket…
Believe it or not, a lot of lottery wins go unclaimed. Sometimes tickets get lost or damaged, other times people just forget to check the results.
Stuff.co.nz recently reported that a New Zealand couple nearly missed out on a Powerball jackpot of $NZ16.2 million (US$12.59 million) until their friends jogged their memories.
“I was out for lunch with a couple of mates when one of them mentioned the big Powerball win,” said one of the winners.
“I hadn’t even heard the jackpot had been won until then.”
The friends were chatting over lunch about the $NZ16.2 million prize when the winner realised he had bought his ticket from the same store that sold the prize ticket.
“When I mentioned it they joked, ‘Are you the winner?’. I just laughed and said ‘there’s no way it could be me – I haven’t even looked at my ticket!'”
Of course the winner checked his ticket when he got home just to make sure.
“I circled the numbers off one by one, and slowly realised that I had all the winning numbers on the same line. I was absolutely stunned – I just couldn’t believe it.”
Lucky he checked!
The couple have yet to work out how they’ll spend their newly acquired fortune, but they’re not in a hurry, “we’ve got the rest of our lives to work that out.”
The jackpot record for New Zealand Powerball is $NZ35,224,854 (US$27.4 Million), but if you want to get in on some serious Powerball Downunder action you can’t go past the Australian Powerball – the jackpot record is AU$80 Million (US$67 million).
Why not grab an Australian Powerball entry from The Lottery Office now – we’ll even tell you when you’ve won!
