2. A sure thing?
In 1992 an Australian gambling syndicate bought almost all the combinations in a Virginia lottery and won, turning a $5M purchase into $27M in winnings! That’s one way to do it! More details at nytimes.com

4. Lucky numbers
At the end of March 2005, an incredible 110 people tied for second prize in the Powerball lottery. Officials suspected cheating but soon discovered that the winners had all used the “lucky numbers” off copies of the same fortune from fortune cookies! A lottery ticket that would have won $30 million was voided because the buyer didn’t want it. A cashier mistakenly printed off a $27 ticket instead of the $12 ticket the customer wanted, so the $27 ticket was voided and one for $12 was issued in its place. Ouch! Verified at Snopes.com
